This archaeological heritage is considered among the most interesting of Sardinia, both for the density of monuments in relation to the extension of the territory of the municipality, and for their variety: worship and burial areas, rock shelters, dolmens, nuraghes, megalithic defensive walls, fortified villages and nuraghic temples.
Olivastri millenari. The millenary olives of Santu Baltolu of Carana are placed in a lovely natural setting on the shores of Lake Liscia, where the contrast between the granitic mountain and the lake results in a landscape unit of absolute value. The oldest of these olive trees, S’Ozzastru, as it is familiarly but respectfully called by the local people, has a circumference of about 22 meters and a height of 8 meters and, according to some studies, should be between 3,800 and 4,000 years of age, which makes it one of the oldest trees in Europe.
Rural churches: the entire territory of Luogosanto is dotted with small rural churches with a simple and austere architecture. Built of granite, mud and mortar, they always have a rectangular plan and the roof supported by semicircular arches. In addition to being centers of ancient religious devotion, today they are the meeting point for the numerous country festivals that are held around the country from May to October.
